Wish Upon a Star

the sky juggles stars tonight

a circus of lights performs

a show full of whimsy but I’m sadder than whiskey

that’s drunk in a room alone

I’m sadder than hungry arms

thrust into dark to look for love’s lost moon

‘cause the night holds no promise

I won’t wish upon a star

‘cause I’ll be waking in the morning

not knowing who you’re with or where you are

the air whispers winter’s words

green turns to rust and gold

breath turns to grey flowers my words all turn sour

my tongue’s lost all its sweet notes

I've forgotten how sweetness goes

only sing the things that I know

I know the night holds…

the wind scatters summer’s dead

leaves scuffing like tired old men

over streets stretching long as the cold nights to come

when you’ll be all my thoughts again

don’t know how long this bitter wind will blow

only know I’m gonna take it alone

cause the nights hold…

…wakin’ every morning
